Age decision
Puppy or adult: which stage should you buy?
A puppy sells hope. An adult sells information. Each stage hides something different.

Side by side
| Question | Puppy | Adult dog |
|---|---|---|
| What you can observe | Parents, litter conditions, early behavior | The dog itself: nerve, recovery, response to handling |
| Health screening | Parents' results; the puppy is too young for final scores | Own hip and elbow results may already exist |
| Your workload | Heavy and constant for many months | Smaller, but you must learn the dog's existing habits |
| Training status | None yet | Whatever has been done, which you can test |
| Main risk | The dog develops differently from the hope | Undisclosed history |
Why screening timing matters
OFA runs preliminary hip screening for dogs between 4 and 23 months, and says normal elbows are not certified until a dog is 2 years old. A puppy therefore cannot show its own certified joint results. With a puppy you lean on the parents' records. With a young adult you may see the dog's own.
When a puppy makes sense
- You want to shape the dog from the start and can commit to the daily work.
- You can meet the parents and see how they behave.
- You have professional help lined up before the dog arrives.
When an adult makes sense
- You want to evaluate temperament in front of you rather than predict it.
- You need a dog that already lives calmly indoors.
- You accept that you will have to bond with a dog that has a past, and ask direct questions about it.
Joint results are only one part of a health picture, so read health testing for Malinois next.
Quick answers
Is a rescue Malinois an option?
It can be, and the adult column applies. Get any history in writing and expect an adjustment period.
How old is a dog with finished joint scores?
OFA does not certify normal elbows before age 2, so look at dogs of about that age or older for complete results.
